Power Infrastructure, Reimagined
A specialized American manufacturer protecting and powering the systems modern life depends on.
At Bridgeport Magnetics Group we are pushing the technological boundaries – re-inventing proven toroidal transformer technology for the demands of the new hybrid grid, and delivering a vital impact on the world by securing the electrical infrastructure that underpins modern life. By advancing power density, efficiency, and reliability, we transform essential systems across medical, utility, datacenter, and industrial applications – turning possibilities into high-performance, dependable power solutions every day.
Four Decades of Toroidal Innovation
Bridgeport Magnetics traces its story back to 1984, when founder Ulrik Poulsen left his roots in Denmark and immigrated to the United States. With a vision for superior toroidal technology, he founded Alpha-Core, Inc. alongside partner Sandu Pescaru. Working from a small operation, they built their own machines to produce high-quality strip-wound magnetic cores that soon supplied leading manufacturers across multiple industries.
Four years later they launched Tortran Inc., applying the same in-house expertise to design and build larger toroidal transformers than most competitors could offer. In 1992 they added Goertz Audio Inc., bringing innovative foil-based audio cables to the portfolio. In 2008 the three companies merged to create Bridgeport Magnetics Group, Inc. – uniting their specialized knowledge under one name in Shelton, Connecticut.

Building the Next Chapter
Today, the story continues under the leadership of Michael Ryan, who is guiding Bridgeport Magnetics with a clear vision to reimagine power infrastructure for the demands of a rapidly evolving grid. Building on the company’s deep roots in toroidal transformer technology, he is pushing the boundaries of what these efficient, compact designs can achieve – from utility-scale systems and renewable-energy integration to datacenters, energy storage, and mission-critical environments.
From its modern facility in Shelton, Connecticut, Bridgeport Magnetics blends generations of specialized expertise with forward-thinking engineering, delivering high-performance solutions that help shape a more reliable, resilient, and efficient electrical future.
“We’re standing at a real inflection point with the electric grid. The surge in power demand from data centers and AI is exposing the limits of infrastructure that was never built for this scale or speed of change. At Bridgeport Magnetics, our vision is to play a meaningful role in what comes next – advancing toroidal transformer technology to deliver the higher efficiency, power density, and reliability that microgrids and modern power infrastructure will need as we move toward a cleaner, more distributed energy future.”
Engineered In-House, Built to Last
Innovation is at the heart of Bridgeport Magnetics. We continuously push the boundaries of toroidal transformer design by developing specialized equipment and processes in-house – delivering higher efficiency, superior thermal performance, and greater reliability, even at larger power ratings. Our custom solutions serve demanding applications in medical, marine, datacenter, utility, and renewable-energy markets.
As the grid evolves, we remain focused on reimagining what toroidal technology can achieve – creating compact, high-performance magnetics that help build a more resilient electrical infrastructure.
